Workshops run every week during the summer and introduce participants to a variety of Arts & Culture and STEM activities. Groups are small with up to 10 participants and are open to all students who are entering, or currently in, middle school. Full descriptions can be found online. All equipment and instruction is provided.

Mad Circus Skillz

June 26 - 30, 9AM - 3PM
Learn to walk on both two and four foot tall stilts, spend some time practicing various forms of juggling, and this summer we will feature the Kendama, a traditional Japanese toy.

Five Friendly Days of Cooking

July 10 - 14, 9AM - 3PM
Five Friendly Days: We will start with a trip to The Friendly Toast, sample some of their best sellers, meet the owner, and study the menu. We will pick items we love from the menu to recreate in our own teaching kitchen for the rest of the week.

Kinetic Sculpture

Explore the excitement of moving art! During this workshop, participants will work as a team to design and create a human-powered rideable art sculpture made from found materials. Ride around in style as we pilot a creation of our imagination.

Intro to Humanoid Robotics with NAO

NAO, one of the world’s most advanced humanoid robots, is the newest member of the New Heights robotics family and is excited to meet you! Standing 23 inches tall with multiple sensors and 25 degrees of freedom, the possibilities are endless with our new friend. Come discover and explore what he can do. Help NAO learn how to perform stories, walk around, dance, hold conversations, and more while learning his graphical programming language.

Fiber Arts & DIY Dyeing

Every day we will attempt a new technique, including but not limited to: shibori indigo dyeing, batik, weaving, ecodyeing, applique, felting, stamping, screen, woodblock and stencil printing. Lunch will be eaten at various natural environments so we can fill the creative well.

Against the Grain Cooking

During this exciting five-day cooking course budding chefs will explore local farm-to-table whole food cooking. They will discover that eating healthy does not mean eating without flavor. We will visit local farms and/or restaurants to learn how they integrate this food movement into their daily practices.

Introduction to Costuming and Cosplay

Dive into the world of creative costuming. Participants will discover many different ways to construct a unique costume based on their own design. We will experiment with techniques, and will visit with and hear from experts within the cosplay community.

Curtain Up: Theater in a Week

Experience in a week what many Destination Imagination teams have months to complete. Collaborate with community experts at the Seacoast Repertory Theater in script writing, sound effects, lighting design, costuming, and acting (just to name a few). We will create a short performance piece using our newly acquired skills.

CRIBS: Art Studio Style

Travel around the Seacoast to get a behind-the-scenes look at where artists create, and the techniques and tools they use to create their magic! This is a great way to inspire the aspiring artist!

LEGO Robotics Boot Camp

Have fun while exploring the exciting world of robots! Using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robotics kit, participants will build and program amazing robotic creations that use sensors to interact with their environment. This workshop is an introduction to FIRST LEGO League and what our teams encounter each fall.

5th Grade: New Heights Sampler

Experience what New Heights is all about! Everyday is packed with robotics, 3D printing, rock climbing, high ropes challenge, boogie boarding, stilting, poster printing, or t-shirt printing. The week is action packed and will end with a BBQ at the beach! For children entering 5th grade in September 2017.

Middle School: New Heights Favorites

Experience middle school fun with this collection of New Heights' favorites! Short Sands (Golden Rod/Fun-o-rama) in York, ice skating at the Rinks, Hiltop Fun Center, Pierce Island Pool, and Archery! Then we’ll top it off with some FunTown/Splash Town. Bring bathing suit, towel and camera…we’re makin’ memories!
